Color Contrast — Is It Readable?

By , About.com GuideJuly 29, 2009

Follow me on:

Time for another rant based on recent reading material. Contrast comes in many forms. I lamented previously about the lack of contrast in a book I was reading. In that case the fonts and the spacing (indents) were insufficient to clearly differentiate certain passages in the book. Last night I ran across some color contrast issues in a magazine that had me tilting the page (so the light would strike it at an angle) and leaning in closer to see what it said.

The magazine section was a bunch of short blurbs on different subjects with each one ending with some sort of main idea or surprise statement. Problem was, instead of using bold or italics to emphasize the twist at the end of the blurb, they used pastel colors such as very light blue, pink, or green. On glossy white paper those tiny words in pastel colors were very hard to read. Not enough contrast! If they wanted to use color, fine. But make it something that stands out. Or, perhaps they wanted the reader to really work for that punchline?

hey,
I need your help. I ordered the T-shirt Factory Deluxe and I do not like it. I want to start doing some cute designs on shirts for my daughter, like the ones that sale for 18 and up, how can I do that? is there a design software that I can buy.

I think this is a growing problem. I can often tell which billboards were design on a computer, without the designer having much real life experience. What has good contrast on the monitor does not always have good contrast in print.

I’ve noticed lately a lot of magazines using pastel backgrounds with white print. Don’t they want me to read what they write? Time to get over it.

RE: the white type on light pastel backgrounds. I hate, hate, hate that. I agree. Do they not want us to read what’s in the mag? Some web sites do the same thing. I click away pretty quick when I run into that.
