Small But Readable Type

On the one hand I like small type. I have my browser set to display smaller fonts. My resolution is set to get more on the screen -- and the icons and fonts are tiny. On the other hand, I find that more and more I have to enlarge the font on certain Web sites in order to actually read the articles. And I have to pull out the reading glasses more often at the grocery store and other places where small print prevails. Earlier this week I read an article at Layers Magazine that focuses on making small type readable. Great article. It goes into the specific things that make small type either terrific or terrible -- it's about more than just picking the right typeface. If you find that you need to be setting type in tiny sizes such as 6 or 7 or 8 points-- read this: Art of Type: Squint-Free Small Type.
