Papercuts

Monday December 29, 2008
No, not the kind you get on your fingers when handling paper. Papercuts is an artform. Twice while blog surfing today I ran across mentions of Roy Ryan. It's a sign. I should blog about him and about work like his. Ryan does creative paper cutting. Cool stuff. Check out some of his papercuts on his blog. He has an Etsy shop too where you can purchase some of his work.

Chinese Culture Guide Lisa Chiu has an article on Chinese papercuts along with some lovely examples. Another papercuts artist, Patrick Gannon, has a blog that features some awesome paper cutting creations. I believe I've blogged previously about some of these incredible paper works that are much more than just shapes cut from paper and pasted to wood or mounted in frames.

Not ready for making elaborate creations like these? How about making a 5-point star in one snip?

Found this to be very interesting & also a bit nostalgic. 20 years ago when I worked in a sewing/craft store & we did what was called Scherenschnitte. There’s a nice website about it at http://www.geocities.com/heartland/valley/8063/scherenschnitte.htm if you’re interested in knowing more.
Really great article, maybe I’ll give it a try again!
