How Well Do You Know Hue?

Saturday September 6, 2008
I'm on a color roll here. About.com Contests Guide Sandra Grauschopf found this little gem. It's a Color Hue Test.
x-rite color hue test
Hue Test
X-Rite, Incorporated
No prizes but you get bragging rights for every point under 8 that you can achieve. Why 8? That's what I scored just now when I tried it. A score of 0 is the goal.

The object is to take four rows of 22 color chips and drag-n-drop 20 of them between two fixed end chips until you're satisfied they are in the correct hue order from end to end.

Looks easy when you first see the jumbled squares of color. Such obvious differences between green and gold or peach and lavender. Yeah. Wait til you start getting them all lined up and trying to discern the oh so subtle differences in four blocks of baby blue.

Once you're done you can compare your score against others in your age group. Go test your abilities to differentiate Color Hues then come back and tell us how you scored. I bet a bunch of you can put my 8 to shame. I'm going to try it again to see if I can do better.

Update: Scored a 7 on try two. It’s those purplish hues in the last row that are messing me up.

I got a 7 on the 1st try!

(4) David says:

0 on the first try - I don’t know how that happened! I was sure I had some wrong.

September 11, 2008 at 7:46 am
(5) Sherry says:

Holy cow! I scored an 88. Yes, you read that correctly. I’m not a graphic artist. Good thing, huh?

September 11, 2008 at 9:07 am
(6) Leah says:

Wow! I got a zero! I thought I had some wrong because I was getting snow blind and thought I would go back to double check some but got bored with it.
My eyesight is getting worse over the years. Just glad I can see something clearly. :o )

(7) kB says:

Received a 0 the first time. I was quite surprised!

September 11, 2008 at 9:41 am
(8) Flame says:

Made a 4!! Was very happy about that, but I work with color almost every day.

September 11, 2008 at 9:58 am
(9) Sue says:

Wow. I scored 4, which is lower than I thought I would achieve. I like it that it showed where my hue discrimination was low (middle of blue to purple). I wonder if that’s the most common problem area.

(10) vikky says:

OMG! I got a zero on my first try!

September 11, 2008 at 10:36 am
(11) Diana says:

Holy cow! I got a zero! But I have to ask, wouldn’t a person be limited in their ability to get a perfect score by their monitor? Some monitors are better than others at color reproduction. I’m using a vibrant LCD, which should reproduce color detail better than an old CRT.

September 11, 2008 at 11:10 am
(12) Bill Curtis says:

7 on my first try. I.m sure i could do better but not certain that I could get zero. we are all in some ways a little color blind and some hue nuances may simply not be discernable. So I don’t really think its how well you know hue but how well a trained eye can actually see it.

September 11, 2008 at 12:35 pm
(13) George says:

Scored 4 — and I tried only once. My computer has a built-in flat LCD monitor (iMac) and no color calibration, so I was amazed that my score was this low. Lowest score in my age sex/group was 0 (male/60-69).

September 11, 2008 at 12:40 pm
(14) Karen says:

I got a 3 on the first try. I decided to leave well enough alone and not try again. Green is the one that got me.

September 11, 2008 at 2:58 pm
(15) Diana Dickenson says:

I scored a 15 my first time then I tried again with the highlight feature on my monitor activated (My monitor needs replacing and I wondered if the highlight function would help me see color better) I scored a 4! I’m using these results to push harder for a new monitor!

September 11, 2008 at 3:24 pm
(16) Laura Mizii says:

I scored an 11. Looked easier than it was. I loved this test. No excuse - I have a very good new monitor - I’m just getting old! LOL

September 11, 2008 at 5:58 pm
(17) cd says:

Got a 4 twice with an LCD monitor. Had trouble with blues & aquas.

September 14, 2008 at 10:53 pm
(24) over hill photog says:

scored 0 at 63. Would have guessed my score to be much worse. Often see the differenct in photos and think my eyes are wrong. Thank you for the chance to check.

September 17, 2008 at 8:35 am
(25) Pat says:

First try - got a 4. I was pleased, but I see many others got 0 on the first try - nice going! Still, a 4 for these old eyes doesn’t seem too bad. : )

September 17, 2008 at 12:43 pm
(26) Kristie says:

Wow that was a great test. I scored 4 on the first try. My husband who is somewhat color blind got 67. It was interesting to see where we have trouble seeing color. Mine was in the blue/aqua, his was in the blue/red areas. Good to know!

September 17, 2008 at 1:45 pm

I got a 4 on the first try!

September 18, 2008 at 8:13 am

(30) Virtual Assistance 4 You says:

What an entertaining way to waste 20 minutes! I even scored a perfect 0 on my first (and probably last) attempt. Thanks for the diversion.

September 18, 2008 at 3:57 pm
(31) Paulida says:

I did the test on my dual screens, 1 x LCD and 1 x CRT screens. I’ve completed both times under 10 minutes each and scored 0 on both. Aged 45, my guess is it’s because I LOVE colour!

September 18, 2008 at 4:53 pm
(32) Linda says:

I too love color despite being legally blind. Yup, that’s correct. I’m really quite good with color actually - and I’m bumming because I didn’t do as well as I expected on my first try at this. No time to play again - too busy, but I might need to recalibrate my monitor anyway. Color in real life and monitor color are in fact two different animals. And that also might account for my score. I got a 23. I’m a young 44.

September 18, 2008 at 11:09 pm
(33) Meegan Lair says:

zero first try! woo woo.. my screen is well calibrated and am pretty good with detail, too. Still, am quite surprised (and happy) about the results.
Good test!

September 20, 2008 at 1:31 pm
(34) Sherry in AZ says:

I’m a semi-retired graphic artist, and I scored zero. I didn’t think I was very good at color. Neat test!!
