Break Up Text

Monday June 9, 2008
In our poetry book jacket makeovers, most of the comments by others focus on the use of images, color, and choice of fonts for the titles. But there are other elements of the layout that deserve attention as well. In our lastest makeover I noted that the text on the flaps was all fully justified text with paragraph indents. Not my favorite way to separate blocks of justified text -- I prefer paragraph spacing -- but certainly a legitimate method.

Using indents or paragraph spacing (but not both together) should be the main methods you use for separating large blocks of text.

However, there are other techniques for breaking up blocks of text that can add visual interest, lead the reader through a document, and just improve the overall appearance of text. Which of these methods do you like? What other methods do you use to separate paragraphs or break up large amounts of text?

The publications I work on tend to use paragraph spacing as opposed to indents. It does take up more space but I find it easier to read, especially in a multi-column format.
