Recently I set out to learn how to use my digital camera a little better. One project involved building an inexpensive (darn cheap) light box. It's easy to improve shots of simple objects with little more than a cardboard box and some white paper. Now I don't claim to have invented this method. My lightbox is simply a variation on some of the other tutorials I've found. One tip I left out of the tutorial: When working with lightweight tissue paper, turn off the ceiling fan.

Doing product shots is one obvious use of this light box. This gallery of Micro-T photos for the About.com Radio Controlled Vehicles site were all taken using my light box the day I first built it while simultaneously trying out different lighting techniques and camera settings. You could also use this simple enhancement to photograph non-flat items or oversized projects you want to include in your graphic design portfolio.
