The Reality of Design?

Tuesday March 27, 2007
With the success of career or talent shows like American Idol, America's Next Top Model, The Apprentice, and American Inventor (returning for a second season), why not a show seeking the best graphic designer?

Hey, we got close with Bravo's Top Design which pitted interior designers, artists, and architects against each other. But wouldn't it be fun to watch print and Web designers take on the challenge of designing animated swoosh logos or crafting creative brochures using only Comic Sans, Times New Roman, and public domain clip art?

In a series of four silly, poorly acted, and sometimes humorous videos by Bryan Hulke, you can get an idea of how this Top Designer reality show might go: Part 1 is an intro to the show and the contestants get their assignment -- designing a movie poster for a movie of their choice but using only Times New Roman. In Part 2 the host checks on their progress and offers a few comments on their work. For Part 3 the judges get to review the finished posters (which are mostly nothing exciting). In Part 4 the episode concludes with the judges deciding which contestant must "pack your laptop and go" and which of the remaining five is the winner of this particular challenge.

The video project was obviously a joke, but if there were a serious, professionally done show -- that focused primarily on realistic projects with serious analysis and critiques and less on the personal antics of the contestants -- I'd watch, would you?
