Shadows - Overused or Misused Graphic Devices?
| Overusing drop shadows is sometimes a sign of amateur design or laziness. Drop shadows are easy to add in page layout, graphics, presentation, and word processing software. But the use of drop shadows isn't necessarily a bad thing. If done with care, drop shadows as well as cast shadows can enhance a composition. Cast shadows aren't just for use within a photo composition either. Photo objects used alone on a blank page can be anchored and made more interesting by the careful use of a cast shadow. | ![]() © J. Bear |
Before you add a default drop shadow in your next desktop publishing project, learn how to use shadows more effectively. Put a little 3D magic onto the flat page without looking lazy or unprofessional.
What are your thoughts on the use of drop shadows on text, around boxes, and in other ways? How about cast shadows? How much time do you spend getting your shadows just right? What do you use in place of shadows (especially drop shadows) to separate overlapping page elements or make an object stand out? | |
