Surprise! Your Print Job May Be Costing You Too Much
![]() "Paper Wall" Photo © Manamanah (Creative Commons Some Rights Reserved) | It's easy to get so caught up in the perfect design that we have trouble seeing alternatives to the masterpiece we've created. However, sometimes "just a little" tweak can save a lot of money (and time and frustration) without sacrificing the integrity of the piece. |
For example, a few minute adjustments to the margins or layout might make using a smaller page feasible -- the smaller dimensions may allow for a smaller sheet size, smaller press, and a smaller chunk of change used for printing. A simple paper substitution can look just as classy but cost a lot less. Some creative thinking about where in the document color is used can allow for a combination four color / black ink print job that costs less than using four color process throughout. Throughout the planning process ask yourself the questions from the Christopher John/the Printworks, Inc. "no-surprises checklist." Some questions are straight-up money-savers ("Are you sure about the quantity? (Re-runs cost lots more than extended first runs.)"), others help prevent expensive or time-consuming errors ("Did several people proof-read the job? Another set of eyes "sees" differently.").
