Choose a Page Layout Size That Fits the Way the Document is Used

I once met a business person who spent a great deal of money on some unique, eye-catching business cards. They were wider and taller than standard business cards, printed on very thick, rich-looking card stock, and beautifully designed. Unfortunately that non-standard size meant that the cards didn't fit in standard card holders so recipients were much more likely to lose track of the cards. The cards made a good first impression but not a lasting impression - because they didn't fit with the way the recipients typically filed away business cards for future reference.

While there is nothing inherently wrong with using atypical layouts and non-standard sizes, always keep in mind how that size affects the way people typically use a business card, brochure, report, letter, booklet, or newsletter. A workable page layout is one that makes it easy for them to pick up, carry around, share, file away, or do whatever people normally do with that kind of document. Get tips on matching the page layout size to use and handling.
