Getting a Job in Graphic Design / Desktop Publishing

Tuesday March 22, 2005
In the course of a discussion about the Print / Graphic Design field the talk turned to the difficulties of finding a job.
Eggles posts::
I discovered some time back that there are three distinct categories of jobs in this field.
  1. the classic GD job working in an agency or studio,
  2. working as an inhouse designer/DTP for an organisation not solely devoted to graphic design -- which can be anything for a manufacturer, an architect, financial planner, school etc etc and
  3. working freelance.
She also suggests a fourth category that combines elements of #2 with more of a prepress focus.

What has been your experience? What kind of jobs are there and how difficult is it to find them? Get desktop publishing and graphic design job search tips and share your own experiences.
