What is the Best Graphic Design Software?

A reader wrote to me saying that he found a lot of information on my site about desktop publishing software but he wanted to know what graphic design software he should get. After ascertaining that he meant print graphic design and wasn't looking for Web design or multimedia or graphics software specifically, I told him that graphic design software and desktop publishing software are pretty much the same thing.
