Logo Design Contests - Can You Spot a Winner?
Tuesday July 1, 2003
Poking around at 5 in the morning I found the Logo Design contest for the Department of Homeland Security. The contest closed in January, but you can view the finalists logo design, their revisions, and the winners and runners-up. The logo that most caught my eye while browsing the finalists turns out to have been the winner too. And something else I noticed, one of my articles on logo design tools was listed as a Design Resource for the contestants. Woo Hoo.
Want to watch logo design in progress? The first round of entries in the Design Challenge over at About Graphic Design have been chosen. These first 6 designers will receive a new logo design project every few weeks. After judging and voting by community members, one designer is eliminated until a single winner remains - American Idol-style.
Take a look at the design specs, then do your own critique of all the logo submissions from round 1 and see if you can pick out the six finalist logo designs (no fair peeking at the winners first). Read comments from some of the judges. Do you think the best designs made the cut?
And for some more fun, check out the various design contest specs, entries, and winners from the Viridian Design Contest Repository.

This is actually a really effective way to get your logo designed. When designers compete they work harder and create better designs. You can run your own logo design contest at marketplaces like DesignBay.
